Problems That Hysterectomy Can Treat

Problems with any of the reproductive organs can disrupt your menstrual cycle, cause symptoms, or threaten your health. Some of the most common problems, which are treated with a hysterectomy, are shown below. A hysterectomy may also be done for other reasons:

  • Fibroids

  • Endometriosis

  • Cancer of the uterus, cervix, endometrium, or ovaries

  • Adenomyosis

  • Cervical dysplasia

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

  • Chronic pelvic pain

Planning your treatment

After going over the results of your exam and any tests, you and your healthcare provider will make a treatment plan. Options may include hysterectomy by itself or along with other treatments. As you create the plan, your healthcare provider may discuss the following questions with you:

  • How severe is your problem?

  • Do you want to have children?

  • Should the tubes or ovaries be removed too?

  • Should the hysterectomy be done abdominally, laparoscopically, or vaginally?
